Heat Index Alert: 40 PH Areas Hit Danger Zone, Bulacan Seen at 45°C
PAGASA says 40 Philippine areas may hit danger-level heat index on May 20, led by San Ildefonso, Bulacan at 45°C.
Heat risk is back in the danger zone as PAGASA warned that 40 areas across the Philippines could experience dangerous heat index levels on Wednesday, May 20. The advisory is highly relevant for commuters, students, outdoor workers and families planning errands during the hottest part of the day.
Based on PAGASA’s classification cited by The Philippine Star, the “danger” range is from 42°C to 51°C. San Ildefonso, Bulacan is expected to post the highest heat index at 45°C, making it the hottest listed area in the latest forecast.
Several locations are also forecast to reach 44°C, including ISU Echague in Isabela, Daet in Camarines Norte, Virac in Catanduanes, Masbate City, Juban in Sorsogon and Catarman in Northern Samar. Other areas expected to reach 43°C include Dagupan City, Tuguegarao City, Hacienda Luisita, Tayabas City, Legazpi City, Roxas City, Iloilo’s Dumangas, Guiuan, Maasin, Dipolog and Butuan City.
PAGASA also listed many areas under the 42°C heat index level, including Laoag City, Iba, Clark Airport, Coron, Puerto Princesa City, Iloilo City, Tacloban City, Borongan, Davao City, General Santos City and Surigao City. The agency warned that danger-level heat may trigger heat cramps and heat exhaustion, while prolonged exposure can lead to heat stroke.
The public was advised to limit outdoor activities and use protection such as umbrellas. PAGASA also said the country may see partly cloudy skies with isolated rains and thunderstorms, with Visayas, MIMAROPA and Bicol affected by easterlies, while Metro Manila and the rest of the country may experience localized thunderstorms that could cause flash floods or landslides during severe weather.
