The Philippine government on Thursday blasted what it called fresh aggressive and dangerous actions by Chinese maritime forces in the West Philippine Sea. Manila said the incidents involved Philippine vessels, aircraft, and even Filipino fisherfolk, making the situation more serious than a routine maritime standoff.
In its statement, the National Maritime Council said the acts were carried out by the China Coast Guard, the People’s Liberation Army Navy, the Chinese Maritime Militia, and other Chinese forces. The council stressed that these happened in waters where the Philippines says it has sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction.
The government also said Philippine operations in those areas remain lawful under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 2016 arbitral ruling. In short, Manila is again leaning on international law to defend its position while rejecting China’s actions on the ground.
Officials warned that these moves do not just create diplomatic friction. They also put lives at risk and weaken regional stability, especially when ordinary Filipino fisherfolk and state personnel are the ones directly exposed to danger during operations at sea.
For now, malinaw ang message from Manila: it is not treating the latest encounters as minor incidents. The government is framing them as unlawful actions that violate international rules, while keeping pressure on China over repeated confrontations in the West Philippine Sea.
