Students in multiple towns across the Negros Island Region are getting an unexpected day off on Friday after Kanlaon Volcano's moderately explosive eruption Thursday night triggered class suspensions throughout the area.

In Negros Occidental, classes have been suspended in Hinigaran, La Carlota City, Himamaylan City, La Castellana, Binalbagan, and Isabela — all levels, public and private. In Murcia, the suspension applies specifically to Barangay Minoyan. La Carlota limited its suspension to barangays closest to the volcano: Yubo, Ara-al, and San Miguel.

Over in Negros Oriental, Canlaon City — the municipality closest to the volcano — also declared walang pasok for all levels. The city's mayor had earlier warned residents to stay vigilant following the eruption that sent ash 2,500 meters into the sky.

The eruption occurred at 7:04 PM Thursday and lasted two minutes, with pyroclastic density currents descending the volcano's eastern and southeastern upper slopes. Three sitios in La Carlota and La Castellana immediately experienced ashfall, making it unsafe for children to travel to school.

PHIVOLCS is still assessing whether to raise the alert level from the current Level 2. For now, parents in the affected areas should monitor local government announcements as the situation continues to develop. GMA News advises refreshing their walang pasok page for real-time updates.
