Viral TikToker Nag-Fake ng Disability Para Makasingit sa LRT — DSWD Says 'That's Illegal, Bes'
A TikTok video showing a user allegedly faking a disability to get priority access at LRT Line 1 has gone viral — and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is not amused.
DSWD spokesperson Irene Dumlao issued a stern warning on Friday against anyone pretending to have disabilities just to cut the line or avail of privileges meant for persons with disabilities (PWDs). "Such actions undermine the reforms we are pushing to ensure fair and inclusive opportunities for our fellow Filipinos with disabilities," Dumlao said.
The agency called the behavior unethical, disrespectful, and a direct insult to the dignity of people who actually live with disabilities every single day. Priority lanes in public transportation exist for a reason — to provide convenience and support to vulnerable sectors, not to be exploited by able-bodied individuals looking for shortcuts.
Dumlao reminded the public that Republic Act 7277, also known as the Magna Carta for Persons with Disabilities, protects PWDs' rights to barrier-free environments and reasonable accommodations. Falsely claiming a disability doesn't just violate proper conduct — it's actually against the law.
The DSWD urged citizens to report any incidents of abuse or discrimination against PWDs to the National Council on Disability Affairs. Because in a country where real PWDs still struggle for basic access, faking it for clout is just next-level kawalang-hiyaan.
