UST shook off a slow start and turned the match around against Ateneo, pulling out a 21-25, 25-11, 25-22, 25-12 win in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum. After dropping the opening set, the Golden Tigresses settled in and controlled the pace the rest of the way.

The fourth set was where UST fully slammed the door. Tied at 6-all, the Tigresses ripped off a 13-4 run to build a huge lead before closing out the match, showing the kind of balance and momentum that Ateneo could not answer late.

Angge Poyos powered UST with 25 points, plus 11 excellent receptions and five digs, while Regina Jurado backed her up with 20 points and 21 excellent digs. That one-two punch gave UST enough firepower and floor defense to keep pressure on almost every rally.

Ateneo got 11 points, 12 digs, and nine receptions from Ana Hermosura, but the Blue Eagles could not sustain their rhythm after taking the first set. The loss pushed Ateneo back into the losing column and dropped the team to 1-7 in the eight-team field.

For UST, the result meant a third straight victory and an improved 5-3 record, good for a share of third place with FEU. Maaga pa sa tournament, but this kind of comeback win is the type that can sharpen a contender’s confidence heading into the tougher stretch of the season.
