Surprise Pick: Marcos Names Duterte Ally Melvin Matibag as New NBI Director
In a move that raised eyebrows across the political spectrum, President Marcos has appointed lawyer Melvin Matibag — a known ally of the Duterte administration — as the new director of the National Bureau of Investigation. Palace Press Officer Claire Castro announced the appointment during a Thursday press briefing, though she couldn’t provide a specific reason for the pick.
When pressed on why Marcos would choose someone associated with the previous administration, Castro said it’s the President’s prerogative. “Nakitaan po niya si Atty. Melvin Matibag na maaaring pagtiwalaan, maaaring magtrabaho sa gobyerno,” she explained. Matibag replaces Atty. Angelito Magno, who only assumed the post last October 2025 — making Magno’s tenure remarkably short.
Matibag is no stranger to government service. He served as acting Cabinet Secretary under the Duterte administration and held positions at the National Transmission Corporation, PDP-Laban, Manila International Airport Authority, and Laguna Lake Development Authority. His appointment signals an interesting political dynamic given the ongoing feud between the Marcos and Duterte camps.
The NBI issued a statement assuring Matibag of its full cooperation: “The Bureau remains unwavering in its commitment to deliver justice without fear or favor and to serve the Filipino people with utmost dedication — regardless of who leads the institution.” Outgoing director Magno was gracious in his exit, expressing confidence in the Bureau’s continued mission.
In related news, Castro also shot down rumors that Customs Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno would be replaced, calling the circulating documents “fake news” and threatening to refer the matter to the NBI for investigation. Seems like Matibag already has his first assignment waiting.
