Stranded sa Siargao! Bad Weather Cancels Multiple Flights, 25 Passengers Sleep at Airport
At least 25 travelers were forced to spend the night at Siargao Airport's Pre-Departure Area after bad weather cancelled multiple flights on Sunday, March 9. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) stepped in to assist the stranded passengers as the situation worsened.
According to CAAP, the flight cancellations were caused by unfavorable weather conditions linked to a low-pressure area (LPA) affecting parts of Mindanao, compounded by the prevailing Northeast Monsoon. The combination made it too dangerous for aircraft to land or take off from the popular island destination.
The disruptions continued into Tuesday, March 10, with airlines announcing even more cancellations. Cebgo alone scrapped at least eight flights covering routes between Siargao and Cebu, Davao, and Clark. Sunlight Air cancelled four flights, while PAL Express pulled four more from the schedule — all routes connecting Siargao to Cebu and Clark.
CAAP has advised affected passengers to coordinate directly with their airlines for rebooking arrangements and travel assistance. Flight operations will only resume once weather conditions improve and safety conditions are met. The agency did not provide an estimated timeline for when normal operations would return.
Siargao, famous for its world-class surfing and beach tourism, regularly experiences weather disruptions during the monsoon season. Travelers planning trips to the island are reminded to check flight status updates before heading to the airport, lalo na kapag may LPA o bagyo sa area.
