Government workers may soon get a new way to fight high power bills after the GSIS announced plans to roll out a solar financing program for home installations.

Under the proposed Ginhawa Solar Energy Loan or GSEL, qualified members can borrow as much as P500,000 to install solar panel systems in their houses. The program is being framed as part of the government's broader push for energy conservation while global oil tensions continue to pressure local electricity costs.

The report said the loan will carry a 5% annual interest rate, payable over five years in 60 equal monthly installments, with no service fee. For a full P500,000 loan, the monthly payment was placed at P10,416.67.

GSIS also said financed systems will come with three years of free insurance coverage against fire, earthquake, lightning, and typhoon once members submit proof that installation has been completed. Applications will be handled through the GSIS Touch mobile app, where borrowers can upload quotations, contracts, and receipts.

The agency's board approved P12.5 billion for the lending pool and another P60 million for insurance support, while GSIS leadership said members could also benefit from net metering by selling excess power back to the grid.
