Shear Line Alert: Heavy Rains Pound VisMin This Weekend — PAGASA Says No Typhoon Naman, But Watch Out for Floods
PAGASA is warning residents across the Visayas and Mindanao to brace for moderate to heavy rains this Saturday as a shear line — formed by the collision of cold northeasterly winds and warm easterly winds — continues to hover over the region. Expect 50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall, which is no joke when you're in a flood-prone area.
Weather specialist Loriedin de la Cruz-Galicia specifically flagged Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Agusan del Sur as the areas that will get the heaviest downpour over the next 24 hours. Scattered rains will also hit the rest of Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Caraga, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, BARMM, and parts of Soccsksargen.
For those in Luzon, the northeast monsoon or amihan is bringing cooler temperatures, especially across Northern and Central Luzon. Cloudy skies with light rains are expected in Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera region, Aurora, and Quezon. Metro Manila gets partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light monsoon rains — not too bad for a Saturday.
The good news? De la Cruz-Galicia confirmed that walang low-pressure area or tropical cyclone being monitored within the Philippine area of responsibility as of Saturday. No gale warning is in effect either, meaning small boats and sea vessels are safe to sail for now.
Still, PAGASA is reminding everyone in shear line-affected areas to stay alert for possible flash floods and landslides. Kung nasa low-lying area ka or near a river, keep your go-bags ready and monitor local weather updates. Better safe than sorry, lalo na kapag gabi na at hindi mo na makikita ang tubig pumapasok.
