A surprising but calm marine sighting in Samboan, Cebu has gone viral after a freediving guide captured dozens of blacktip reef sharks moving through shallow water near the shore. The animals were visible even from a nearby highway, making the encounter feel extra unreal for locals and online viewers.
In GMA Integrated News' report, guide Kenneth Busalanan said the sharks were swimming in a shallow section of the sea, around two to three meters deep. He estimated that around 20 to 30 sharks were in the area, circling peacefully instead of acting aggressively.
Tourism officials in Samboan said the appearance of the sharks is not unusual in their waters. They explained that blacktip reef sharks are commonly seen around the Colase Marine Sanctuary, especially during their season from March to June, kaya hindi talaga ito random one-time event.
Marine experts also stressed that the species, scientifically known as Carcharhinus melanopterus, is widely found in shallow coastal waters and coral reefs across the Indo-Pacific, including the Philippines. They usually feed on small fish, squid, and crustaceans, and are considered nearly threatened.
Oceana Philippines science and campaign specialist Diovanie De Jesus said blacktip reef sharks are generally shy and rarely dangerous to humans unless provoked. In short, nakakagulat tingnan, pero hindi raw ito dahilan for panic.
