Kanlaon Volcano roared back to life on Thursday afternoon, unleashing a moderately explosive eruption at 4:38 PM that lasted about two minutes. The eruption at the summit crater sent a massive ash cloud billowing over parts of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, prompting immediate warnings from authorities.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) confirmed the activity shortly after it happened. Residents in nearby areas captured dramatic videos and photos of the eruption, which quickly went viral on social media. One witness, Sam Pantalita, told Manila Bulletin that her house sits just 5.4 kilometers from the crater — close enough to see the explosion firsthand.

The eruption was visible from as far as the Barangay Cabacungan public plaza in La Castellana, Negros Occidental. The Negros Occidental Operations Center issued an advisory at 4:39 PM warning the public to be cautious of pyroclastic flow and ashfall, particularly in areas southwest of the volcano.

Kanlaon, which sits in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, last erupted on October 24, 2025, affecting thousands of residents across both Negros provinces. The volcano has been showing signs of unrest in recent weeks, with multiple episodes of ash emissions leading up to today’s explosive event.

Residents in the danger zones are being urged to stay alert and follow evacuation protocols. With Kanlaon continuing its restless behavior, Phivolcs is expected to closely monitor the situation and may adjust the alert level in the coming hours.
