PNP Wants Electric Patrol Cars Na — Fuel Crisis Is the Wake-Up Call
The Philippine National Police is seriously considering switching to electric vehicles for its patrol fleet, with PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. calling the ongoing Middle East tensions a "wake-up call" for the agency to rethink how it sources its rides.
Nartatez said the conflict between the US and Iran is expected to significantly impact fuel supply and drive up operational costs for law enforcement. Para sa isang agency na sobrang dependent sa fuel every single day, the potential price hikes are a real concern.
But before anyone gets too excited about seeing Tesla patrol cars cruising EDSA, the PNP chief stressed that a thorough study needs to happen first. The key question: are EVs practical, reliable, and tough enough for the daily grind of police operations?
The urgency is real. The Department of Energy's Oil Industry Management Bureau has warned that fuel prices could spike by as much as P7 to P10 per liter in the coming weeks as global oil markets react to the escalating US-Iran tensions.
President Marcos has also stepped in, with Malacañang confirming that he intends to certify as urgent new measures that would give him the power to reduce excise taxes on oil products — a move aimed at cushioning the blow for ordinary Filipinos.
