The Philippine National Police is cracking down on gas stations that suddenly shut their doors amid the ongoing fuel price crisis — and they're not buying excuses.

PNP chief General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement on Sunday that while they understand the pressures gas station operators face due to the Middle East crisis, any illegal schemes will be met with swift police action. 'If the sudden closure is for illegal scheme, then expect police action on this matter,' he warned.

The Department of Energy has tapped the PNP to assist in checking gas stations allegedly taking advantage of the global oil crisis. Netizens have been flooding social media with complaints about gas stations closing without notice — raising suspicions of hoarding and price manipulation.

Chiefs of police nationwide have been directed to coordinate with the DOE and local government units to investigate the sudden closures. Help desks are being set up to receive reports from the public, and police personnel will be deployed near critical supply points to ensure compliance.

The move comes as fuel prices continue to surge due to tensions in the Middle East, with the Philippine peso also sliding to a record low of 59.735 against the US dollar. Motorists are urged to report any suspicious gas station closures to their nearest police station.
