PNP Rescues 7 Students Recruited Online for Mass Shootings — Parents, Check Your Kids' Games Now
Seven minors who were allegedly being groomed online for violent attacks have been rescued by the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG), marking one of the most disturbing cases of online radicalization targeting Filipino youth. The operation was launched after foreign law enforcement partners tipped off Philippine authorities about suspicious activity in local online gaming communities.
According to the PNP, the recruitment and psychological manipulation happened through chat groups and online discussions within gaming platforms. These groups allegedly encouraged violent acts, including assaults and mass shootings — and even suggested the attackers commit suicide afterward. Several notorious mass killers were reportedly being idolized within the group's discussions.
PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered the ACG to ramp up monitoring of gaming communities and chat platforms where extremist recruiters may be lurking. The police are also coordinating directly with gaming platform developers to flag and remove suspicious accounts as quickly as possible.
The government is also now assessing whether existing Philippine laws are enough to deal with this kind of online threat. Nartatez didn't hold back in his message to parents: "Maging digital guardians po tayo. Huwag nating iwan ang mga bata na sila lang ang kausap ng screen. Alamin ninyo kung sino ang kalaro nila."
His warning was simple but chilling: "Gaming is a social space. If you wouldn't let a stranger into your house, don't let them into your child's headset or chatbox." With online gaming more popular than ever among Filipino kids, this case is a serious wake-up call for every parent in the country.
