In a rare piece of good news amid all the oil crisis drama, the Philippine National Police reported on Wednesday that the country's crime rate has dropped by 7.2% in the first months of 2026 compared to the same period last year.

"From January to March 12, 2026, the peace and order situation in the country remains to be manageable," said PNP Directorate for Investigation and Detection Management deputy director Police Brigadier General Nestor Babagay Jr. during a forum at the Manila Hotel.

The numbers are even better when you look at focus crimes — the serious stuff like murder, homicide, rape, robbery, theft, and carnapping. Those dropped by a whopping 12.66%, from 7,301 incidents in early 2025 down to 6,377 in the same period this year. That's 924 fewer incidents of the crimes that matter most to everyday Filipinos.

PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Randulf Tuaño emphasized that the decline shows they're on the right track. "Meaning our focus agenda, we are on the right direction as far as crime prevention is concerned," he said. The reduction in both index and non-index crimes suggests the improvement isn't just in one category — it's across the board.

While there's still a long way to go before anyone feels completely safe walking Manila's streets at night, the downward trend is encouraging. If the PNP can sustain this momentum through the rest of 2026, it would mark one of the more significant crime reductions in recent years.
