In what might be the most unexpected political development of 2026, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and former Vice President-turned-Naga City Mayor Leni Robredo are set to meet this Saturday, February 21. Malacañang confirmed that Marcos will visit Naga City to oversee the Oplan Kontra Baha flood mitigation project — and yes, he’ll be meeting with Mayor Robredo.

Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed the visit at a press briefing, saying DPWH personnel are already busy cleaning creeks, drainage systems, and rivers in Naga City. When asked if the two former rivals would discuss anything beyond flood control, Castro was coy: “Iyan ang abangan ninyo.”

The meeting comes just one day after VP Sara Duterte announced her 2028 presidential bid, leading to immediate speculation about a possible Marcos-Robredo political alliance. Analysts have pointed out that uniting the two camps could be the key to countering Duterte, who continues to enjoy high trust ratings despite her ongoing impeachment troubles.

Marcos and Robredo have a long rivalry — she beat him in the 2016 vice presidential race, and he defeated her in the 2022 presidential election. But politics makes strange bedfellows, and the common threat of a Duterte presidency appears to be bringing them together. Among other alliances being floated are a Duterte-Imee Marcos tandem and a Robredo-Risa Hontiveros ticket.

Castro insisted it’s “too early for politics” and that Marcos is focused on growing the economy. But with 2028 already casting a long shadow, this Naga City meeting could be the start of something much bigger than flood control.
