The Philippines is flexing its role as 2026 ASEAN Chair this week as the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) hosts the 35th ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Council meetings from March 2-5 in Makati City.

DSWD Secretary Rexlon Gatchalian announced that the Philippines, as ASCC chairman, will champion four thematic priorities under the acronym R.I.S.E — Resilient and empowered families, Inclusive development, Smart youth and innovation, and Environmentally-sustainable and food-secure future.

DSWD Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said the country's broader chairmanship would focus on three pillars: peace and security, prosperity, and people empowerment, under the overall theme 'Navigating our Future, Together.' The DSWD leads the socio-cultural pillar of ASEAN, making these meetings a key part of the Philippines' hosting duties.

Beyond the policy discussions, the DSWD is also using the occasion to showcase Filipino culture to fellow ASEAN member nations through presentations of Philippine culinary heritage, traditional dances, and songs. 'More than chairing and hosting, the DSWD seeks to ensure that policy discussions will result in regional initiatives felt by ASEAN people,' Dumlao said.

The Philippines assumed the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026 following Malaysia's term. Three high-level ASEAN forums are scheduled this week in Makati, making it one of the busiest diplomatic weeks for the country this year.
