PH Sports Hall of Fame Adds New Legends to the May Honors List
Another batch of Filipino sports greats is set to be honored as the Philippine Sports Hall of Fame prepares for its fifth induction ceremony this May. The event will take place at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum, one of the country’s most historic sports venues.
Philstar.com reported that the selection process was led by Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick Gregorio and Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino. They were joined by other sports and institutional officials in screening the nominees for the next round of enshrinement.
The committee worked through a pool of 75 athletes and coaches before choosing the newest additions to the Hall of Fame. Veteran sports journalists also helped review the nominees to make sure the final picks met the standards for enshrinement and reflected major accomplishments in competition.
The Hall of Fame was created under Republic Act No. 8757 and has been honoring Filipino sports icons since its first induction in 2010. So far, 47 names have already been immortalized, including stars from boxing, athletics, bowling, basketball, and other disciplines that helped shape the country’s sporting legacy.
Eligibility remains strict: nominees must be Filipino athletes, coaches, or trainers with podium finishes in major regional or global meets, or with world titles in pro or amateur competition. In short, hindi basta sikat lang — this honor is reserved for names whose results truly changed Philippine sports history.
