After a disappointing 2025 that saw the Philippine boxing team bring home just one gold medal from the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, newly elected Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) president Marcus Manalo is determined to turn things around this year — and the calendar is packed.

"I feel like 2025 could have been better for us. It's another year, so we have big plans," Manalo said at the annual Philippine Sportswriters Association Awards Night at the Diamond Hotel on February 16. "Loaded rin yung calendar this year with the upcoming major tournaments."

Filipino pugs kick off with the World Boxing Cup Stage 1 in Brazil in April, followed by Stage 2 in China in June, with the finals in Uzbekistan in November. The Asian Boxing Championship is set for Mongolia from March 28 to April 11. The Asian Games follow in September, and the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in November.

Young PH boxers also have the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal this October to look forward to. "Talaga loaded calendar ito for boxing. Hopefully, we can get to the podium a lot more this year compared to 2025," Manalo added with cautious optimism.

Though just in his first year as ABAP president, Manalo isn't shying away from the pressure. "Definitely, bigger responsibility. But at the same time, it's an exciting challenge," he said. "There are plenty of opportunities both at the local and international level. We hope to really bring more to the sport of boxing."
