Palawan Gets a New Energy Card: PH to Open First Oil and Gas R&D Lab
The Philippines is preparing to open its first research and development laboratory focused on oil and gas exploration, with the facility set to launch in Palawan on March 25.
The Manila Times reported that the Department of Science and Technology will open the Drilling Fluids Research and Innovation or DFRI laboratory. The facility is expected to help develop locally available and more sustainable drilling fluids.
That matters because drilling fluids are critical in oil and gas exploration, and the government wants stronger local capability instead of depending too heavily on imported inputs. In short, diskarte itong pang long-term energy resilience.
DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said the growing conflict in the Middle East has already exposed how vulnerable countries can be when global oil supply chains are shaken and fuel prices keep climbing.
For the government, the new lab is not just a science project. It is also a strategic move meant to improve the country's petroleum-related capacity and help secure future supply support using homegrown research.
