If you're a PUV driver struggling with gas prices right now, here's some good news — the government is rolling out a P5,000 fuel subsidy starting March 17, and Metro Manila tricycle drivers get it first.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez confirmed that the Department of Transportation has been coordinating with DSWD and local government units to make the payouts happen. After tricycles, the subsidy will also reach jeepney drivers, taxi operators, TNVS units, and bus drivers. It's a direct response to the skyrocketing fuel prices caused by tensions sa Middle East.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian assured the public that provincial drivers won't be left out. "We will just kick it off in Metro Manila, but the payouts will quickly follow in other areas," he said. The DSWD has nationwide offices ready for simultaneous payouts once the initial rollout is done.

But that's not all the relief on the table. Secretary Lopez has asked toll operators to consider discounts for Class 3 vehicles like buses and trucks, which could mean savings of P5 to P7 per liter — roughly P7,000 for every 100 liters of fuel. Hindi biro yung savings na 'yan for operators running multiple vehicles daily.

Meanwhile, a fare hike is also being studied. LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II is expected to finish reviewing fare increase petitions within the week, so commuters should brace for a possible adjustment soon. The government is clearly trying to balance driver welfare with commuter impact — a tough spot to be in, pero kailangan.
