P5,000 Fuel Subsidy Para sa PUV Drivers, Ise-start na Next Week!
Good news for jeepney, tricycle, taxi, and bus drivers — the government is rolling out a P5,000 fuel subsidy starting March 17, and Metro Manila PUV drivers will be first in line. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) confirmed the payout schedule as President Marcos moves to cushion the blow of skyrocketing oil prices caused by ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said tricycle drivers in Metro Manila will receive the cash first, followed by jeepney, taxi, TNVS, and bus operators. The DOTr is coordinating with the DSWD and local government units para mabilis na makarating ang ayuda sa mga affected drivers.
Hindi lang Metro Manila ang tatanggap — DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian confirmed that the subsidy will expand nationwide after the initial rollout, with field offices simultaneously handling payouts across all regions. Multiple agencies including the LTFRB, DICT, and DILG are working together to verify qualified beneficiaries.
Beyond cash assistance, the government is also exploring non-cash measures. Lopez said the DOTr has coordinated with toll operators to provide discounts for Class 3 vehicles like buses and trucks. The LTFRB is also studying petitions for a possible fare increase to further support drivers and operators, though officials stressed they're carefully balancing driver welfare and commuter affordability.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines is also reviewing potential reductions in airport landing and takeoff fees ahead of Holy Week, when travel demand typically spikes. With fuel prices continuing to climb, the multi-agency response signals the government's urgency in addressing what could be a prolonged oil crisis.
