A devastating fire tore through a residential neighborhood in Tondo, Manila early Friday morning, leaving more than 200 families homeless and scrambling for shelter. The blaze, which quickly escalated to a fourth alarm, is one of the worst fire incidents in the area this year.

According to the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Department, the fire was first reported at around 1:09 a.m. and rapidly spread through the densely packed community. It was raised to first alarm by 1:18 a.m., second alarm by 1:24 a.m., third alarm by 1:31 a.m., and fourth alarm by 2:00 a.m. — all within less than an hour.

Firefighters battled the flames for over two hours before finally declaring it under control at around 4:30 a.m. The rapid spread of the fire is likely due to the cramped housing conditions typical of Tondo, where homes are built close together with narrow alleys that make it difficult for fire trucks to access.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. In the meantime, the Manila Department of Social Welfare has been providing assistance to the displaced families, including food, clothing, and temporary shelter at nearby evacuation centers.

Tondo has long been one of Manila's most fire-prone areas due to its high population density and aging infrastructure. Residents are urging local government officials to fast-track fire prevention programs and improve emergency response access in their communities.
