President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday led the rollout of new government relief measures meant to soften the blow of fuel price volatility linked to the ongoing war in the Middle East. Sa madaling sabi, the administration is trying to keep transport costs from hitting drivers and commuters even harder.
At Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange, Marcos announced that bus operators will now receive a P10,000 fuel subsidy for each unit. He said the government can release the money through GCash, ATM transfers, checks, or cash, while also asking operators and drivers to work with the government so the riding public will not be forced into even higher fares.
The Department of Transportation said 27 operators covering 1,096 bus units at PITX were included in the distribution. At the same time, the government rolled out a 50-percent fare discount for all passengers of LRT-2 and MRT-3 starting March 23, plus reduced toll rates for qualified public utility vehicles and heavy trucks on selected expressways.
Authorities also said the wider P2.5-billion fuel subsidy program targets 245,066 driver-beneficiaries and covers more than 1.18 million PUV units. Under the plan, modern jeepney operators may receive P10,000 per unit while traditional jeepney operators may receive P5,000 per unit, with separate aid for drivers, taxis, UV Express units, and later on for tricycle and delivery service beneficiaries after Holy Week.
