May Discount Na! Toll Fees for PUVs and Trucks Get Temporary Cut Starting March 23
Public utility vehicles, buses, and freight trucks are getting a temporary toll break starting Monday, March 23, after the Department of Transportation announced a two-month discount program for selected expressways.
According to the DOTr, the move is meant to soften the blow of rising fuel costs linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The agency said the discount may even be extended if conditions still call for it after the initial review period.
The reduced rates will apply on NLEX, SLEX, and STAR Tollway, with different discounts depending on vehicle class. Jeepneys and modernized jeepneys, for example, will see slightly lower fees, while larger public transport units and freight vehicles will get bigger peso savings on longer trips.
Instead of a straight price cut at the toll booth, the system will work through weekly RFID rebates for qualified vehicles. To avail, operators must have an RFID account, be registered with the LTFRB, and hold a valid certificate of franchise, so medyo may paperwork pa rin before the savings kick in.
Transportation Secretary Banoy Lopez said the temporary relief was made possible with the cooperation of toll operators, as the government looks for ways to help essential transport sectors manage operating costs without stopping service for commuters and cargo customers.
