The Philippines is being considered as a possible site for a new 30mm ammunition production line under a United States-led defense manufacturing partnership, according to a Pentagon statement carried by Rappler. The proposal is part of a wider effort to strengthen military supply chains closer to the Indo-Pacific region.

The initiative came out of the Partnership for Indo-Pacific Industrial Resilience, or PIPIR, a grouping launched by the US in 2024 to reduce supply chain risks and help allies produce and maintain defense equipment nearer to potential flashpoints. The latest virtual meeting also expanded the bloc to 16 members after Thailand and the United Kingdom joined.

Under the plan being explored, the Philippines could host a facility for loading, assembling, and packaging 30mm cannon rounds. These munitions are commonly used by military aircraft and certain ground vehicles, making the proposal significant for regional defense readiness.

The same meeting also backed a new missile motor production program led by Japan and discussed stronger drone cooperation across Asia, including work on batteries, small motors, and shared standards for military drone systems. In short, hindi lang bala ang usapan—kasama rin ang broader defense manufacturing network.

For the Philippines, the proposal does not yet mean a final go-signal, but it places the country deeper inside an emerging allied production map. Source: Rappler
