Marikina City just became even more bike-friendly. The city government switched on 92 new LED lamps along a 2.6-kilometer stretch of bike lane corridors on Friday night, running from Champagnat Street in Marikina Heights to Goodrich Village Subdivision in Concepcion Uno. The ceremonial lighting was led by Mayor Maan Teodoro and Rep. Marcy Teodoro.

The installations focused specifically on areas near creeks and tunnels — spots that are notoriously dangerous for cyclists after dark. Mayor Teodoro made it clear this wasn't about aesthetics. "This is not merely decorative. What we want is for our bike lanes to be properly used and safe," she said.

While 2.6 kilometers have been illuminated, there are plans for eight more kilometers of improvement. Marikina currently has about 70 kilometers of existing bike lanes — the most extensive network in Metro Manila — and aims to expand further as part of an interconnected and sustainable mobility network.

Marikina has long been the gold standard for cycling infrastructure in the Philippines. While other Metro Manila cities are still debating whether to build bike lanes at all, Marikina is already on the next level — making sure its existing lanes are well-lit, safe, and actually usable at night.

For the thousands of Marikeños who commute by bicycle daily — many of them workers and students who ride in the early morning or late evening — proper lighting can literally be the difference between a safe ride home and an accident. Simple infrastructure, massive impact. Other cities, take notes. 🚲
