A magnitude 5.4 earthquake jolted waters southeast of Balut Island in Davao Occidental at 1:22 AM Sunday, March 1, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. The quake's epicenter was located 93 kilometers south of Balut Island, Sarangani town, at a depth of 56 kilometers.

PHIVOLCS classified the tremor as tectonic in origin — meaning it was caused by the movement of tectonic plates rather than volcanic activity. Instrumental intensity readings showed the shaking reached Intensity II (slightly felt) in Malungon, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato; and Palimbang, Sultan Kudarat.

The earthquake was barely perceptible (Intensity I) in Maasim and Malapatan in Sarangani; Koronadal City and T'Boli in South Cotabato; Santa Maria in Davao Occidental; and Digos City in Davao del Sur. Despite the relatively strong magnitude, the depth of the quake helped minimize its surface impact.

PHIVOLCS said no damage is expected from the earthquake but warned that aftershocks are possible. The agency continues to monitor the area for any follow-up seismic activity.

The Philippines sits along the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Just this week, the country has been dealing with back-to-back eruptions from both Mayon and Kanlaon volcanoes — a reminder that living on the Ring of Fire means constant vigilance against natural hazards.
