Long Weekend Alert: March 20 Officially Declared Regular Holiday for Eid'l Fitr
Mark your calendars, mga ka-trabaho — Malacañang has officially published Proclamation 1189 declaring March 20, Friday, as a regular holiday nationwide in celebration of Eid'l Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. That means a long weekend is coming!
The proclamation was signed by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto on March 12 and published on the Official Gazette website the same day. It was based on the recommendation of the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), which suggested either March 20 or March 21 as possible dates for the holiday.
According to the proclamation, the holiday aims to "bring the religious and cultural significance of the Eid'l Fitr to the fore of national consciousness" and allow all Filipinos to join their Muslim brothers and sisters in celebrating the feast in peace and harmony.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. himself joined Muslim community leaders and members at the Grand Iftar on March 12, reaffirming the government's respect for the traditions and contributions of Filipino Muslims. The Presidential Communications Office noted that Eid'l Fitr marks the end of a period devoted to prayer, reflection, and fasting.
As a regular holiday, employees who work on March 20 are entitled to double pay. For everyone else, enjoy the extra rest day — you deserve it. Eid Mubarak to all our Muslim readers!
