Manila is rolling out a quick pampalubag move for commuters and jeepney workers as fuel prices keep climbing. The city government has hired 1,442 jeepney drivers to provide free rides under a temporary transport program meant to ease the pressure from the Middle East-driven oil spike.

According to Rappler, the free transport setup takes effect on Monday, March 30, and Tuesday, March 31, before pausing for Holy Week. It will return from April 6 to April 8, giving riders in several parts of the capital a short but badly needed fare break.

Mayor Isko Moreno said the program is Manila’s immediate response to public need while fuel costs remain high. City Hall is prepared to spend about P21.63 million, and officials may extend the initiative if it works well and funds remain available.

Under the plan, each participating jeepney gets P3,000 in support — P1,000 for the driver, P1,000 for the operator, and P1,000 for diesel. Every unit will also have a Manila Traffic and Parking Bureau enforcer on board, and the jeepneys will carry white banners identifying them as part of the city-backed free ride program.

The city tapped 22 jeepney groups covering routes from Divisoria and Quiapo to Sta. Ana, Pandacan, Paco, Blumentritt, and other busy corridors. For commuters, simple lang ang bottom line: if you spot the marked PUJ, puwede kang sumakay nang libre while the program is active.
