Lady Spikers Stay Perfect at 4-0 — DLSU Dominates Ateneo in UAAP 88 Volleyball, 16th Straight Win Over Blue Eagles
The La Salle Lady Spikers continued their dominant march through UAAP Season 88, dispatching the Ateneo Blue Eagles in four sets, 25-14, 21-25, 25-15, 25-17, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Sunday afternoon. The win extended DLSU's perfect record to 4-0 and marked their incredible 16th consecutive victory over Ateneo — a streak dating back to Season 79 in April 2017.
Angel Canino was sensational once again, leading all scorers with 21 points built on 20 attacks and an ace, adding 11 excellent receptions. Lilay Del Castillo and Amie Provido provided strong support with 18 and 17 points respectively, giving the Lady Spikers a well-rounded offensive attack.
The Blue Eagles actually managed something no other team has done this season — they took a set off La Salle. After getting demolished 14-25 in the opener, Ateneo fought back to win the second set 25-21, briefly giving their fans hope. But the Lady Spikers quickly regained control and never looked back.
Deputy coach Noel Orcullo admitted the team got too relaxed. 'Hindi puwedeng biruin namin yung kalaban. Masyado kaming nag-relax nung second set,' he said. He praised Ateneo's defensive tenacity: 'Ang Ateneo sobrang tiyaga, grabe yung depensa nila sa baba.'
For Ateneo, Ana Hermosura led the charge with 18 points, eight receptions, and four digs, while JLo Delos Santos added 15 points. But it wasn't enough as the Blue Eagles dropped to 0-4 on the season. La Salle, under the guidance of legendary head coach Ramil De Jesus, looks every bit like the team to beat this UAAP season.
