Your favorite sharp-toothed, furry little monster is headed to Hollywood. Sony Pictures and Chinese toy giant Pop Mart have officially announced they're co-developing a feature film starring Labubu — the wildly popular collectible that's taken the world (and every Pinoy collector) by storm.

The news dropped at a Paris event celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Monsters universe. Wonka and Paddington director Paul King is attached to helm the project, and he'll co-write the screenplay with Tony Award-winning playwright Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen, Tick, Tick... Boom!). If those names don't get you hyped, check ko na lang kung buhay ka pa.

Story details are still under wraps, but the film will reportedly blend live-action and CGI to bring Labubu's whimsical world to life. Michael Schaefer (The Martian) and Wenxin She (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) are producing, with Labubu creator Kasing Lung — a Hong Kong-born, Netherlands-raised artist — serving as executive producer.

For the uninitiated, Labubu was born from Kasing Lung's picture books back in 2015. The original figurines were produced by How2Work before Pop Mart acquired the line in 2019 — and that's when things went viral. The ugly-cute toys with their signature sharp teeth, pointy ears, and fuzzy bodies became a global phenomenon, with celebrity fans fueling the hype even further.

With Pop Mart stores popping up all over Manila and Labubu commanding insane resale prices sa Shopee, this movie announcement is going to send Filipino collectors into overdrive. No release date yet, but expect a lot more Labubu content — and probably even longer lines at Pop Mart — in the months to come.
