Jeric Gonzales Confirms Breakup with Rabiya Mateo — 'Mutual Kami, We Needed to Grow'
Ang dating love team ng showbiz ay officially done na. Actor Jeric Gonzales confirmed on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda that he and Miss Universe Philippines 2020 Rabiya Mateo have mutually decided to go their separate ways.
During the emotional interview that aired Monday, Jeric refused to go into the specifics of the breakup, saying he wanted to respect Rabiya's choice to stay silent about the matter. "Si Rabiya kasi, wala siyang binanggit about dito sa topic na 'to, about sa breakup, so bilang respeto sa kanya, ayoko pong magsalita about it," the Sparkle star told host Boy Abunda.
Boy Abunda reminded Jeric of the couple's past appearance on the show where they famously declared they had fought hard for their love. When asked if they had tried again, Jeric was candid: "Of course, Tito Boy. Hindi ko maipagkakaila 'yun na ipinaglaban namin." But ultimately, the actor said both of them realized na mas mahihirapan sila pareho if they kept pushing. "We have to grow," he said simply.
Despite the split, Jeric insists they remain friends. He thanked Rabiya for the years they spent together and for understanding the demands of showbiz life. "Malawak siyang tao, si Rabiya. Inalagaan niya ako for all those years," he shared, getting visibly emotional.
In closing, the actor offered a heartfelt apology — not for the breakup itself, but for not being able to walk beside her moving forward. "Sorry kasi sana masamahan ko pa siya ngayon sa lahat ng mga journey niya, but I'm proud of her and I wish her all the best," Jeric said. Both stars appear focused on their individual careers, with Jeric busy filming a new movie and Rabiya reportedly considering a return to medical school.
