Iza Calzado opened up about one of the most painful reasons she once feared becoming a mother: the trauma of losing her own mother to suicide. In an interview highlighted by ABS-CBN, the actress said that experience stayed with her for years and shaped how she thought about pregnancy, parenting, and her own mental health.

During her conversation with journalist Karmina Constantino, Calzado was asked whether she ever worried that she might carry the same affliction that took her mother away. The actress, who is also a mental health advocate, became emotional but said she did not find the question offensive because the platform allowed for a serious and honest discussion.

Calzado admitted that one of her deepest fears was that something might suddenly snap after giving birth. She said the thought of having a child while carrying those emotional scars was exactly why motherhood once felt terrifying, especially after everything she had witnessed and endured earlier in life.

Now a mother to her three-year-old daughter Deia Amihan, Calzado said the journey has also helped her understand more about what her mother may have gone through. She linked that reflection to her support for women’s empowerment, saying both she and her mother had been in situations she never wants her daughter to face.

Even with those fears, Calzado said she focuses on love, values, strength, and resilience instead of letting anxiety take over. As she put it, the fear still shows up from time to time, pero hindi niya iyon tinatambayan. That line alone probably hit a lot of people who know what it means to live with pain and still move forward.
