Israel Promises Lifetime Support for Family of Pinay Caregiver Killed in Iranian Airstrike
The Israeli government has committed to providing lifelong support to the family of Mary Anne Velasquez de Vera, a 32-year-old Filipina caregiver from Basista, Pangasinan, who was killed by shrapnel during an Iranian missile strike in Tel Aviv on March 1. Israeli Ambassador Dana Kursh made the announcement during a media briefing in Manila on Tuesday.
"I can guarantee that the government of Israel will support de Vera's family and provide everything necessary to offer them as much comfort as possible," Kursh said. Under Israeli law, de Vera will be formally recognized as a victim of war or a terrorist attack — a designation that unlocks comprehensive benefits for her surviving family members.
The benefits package includes life insurance, a monthly allowance for her spouse and parents, and psychological assistance. Ambassador Kursh emphasized that these are the same protections extended to Israeli citizens and any foreign nationals harmed in conflict or terrorism situations. "I don't know the exact amounts, but what matters is the commitment of the state of Israel," she said.
De Vera was reportedly helping her elderly ward to safety when the missile hit her apartment. Kursh said she would personally be at the airport when de Vera's remains are repatriated to Pangasinan, calling the gesture a reflection of Israel's solidarity with the bereaved family. "It will not bring back Mary Anne... But it will try to ease, at least in part, the daily challenges they face," the ambassador said, visibly emotional.
Meanwhile, the DSWD has also stepped in, activating its Crisis Intervention Program and coordinating with its Ilocos Region field office and the Basista local government. Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao confirmed the agency will provide financial and psychosocial assistance to de Vera's family as they navigate this tragedy.
