The legal battle around former president Rodrigo Duterte just hit another major date. The International Criminal Court's Appeals Chamber said it will release its judgment on April 22 on Duterte's challenge to the court's jurisdiction, so malinaw na may susunod na big courtroom moment this month.

According to The Manila Times, the scheduling order was dated April 2 and came from a five-judge panel led by Judge Luz del Carmen Ibáñez Carranza. The ruling will be delivered in open court at 11 a.m., making it a key checkpoint in the case tied to Duterte's bloody anti-drug campaign.

Duterte is trying to reverse an earlier October 2025 decision by ICC Pre-Trial Chamber I, which rejected his argument that the tribunal has no authority to hear the case. The core issue is whether the ICC can still handle alleged crimes committed while the Philippines was still a member of the Rome Statute.

The article noted that the killings under investigation cover the period from 2011 to 2019, spanning Duterte's years as Davao City mayor and later as president. Even though the Philippines formally withdrew from the ICC in March 2019, the court has maintained that it keeps jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed before that withdrawal took effect.

What happens on April 22 matters a lot: the judges will help determine whether the case moves closer to trial or gets cut off on jurisdictional grounds. Source: https://www.manilatimes.net/2026/04/03/news/icc-to-deliver-ruling-on-duterte-jurisdiction-appeal-on-april-22/2313866
