The Department of Public Works and Highways is stepping up road maintenance work as Holy Week travel begins to build, with Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon saying crews have been ordered to keep major roads safe, clear, and commuter-friendly.

Based on the report, all DPWH regional and district engineering offices were told to check major thoroughfares for potholes, cracks, blocked areas, and missing or hard-to-read signs. The goal is simple: make travel smoother for the expected surge of passengers heading out of Metro Manila and other hubs.

Dizon said maintenance crews are already working on round-the-clock shifts. The work includes patching road defects, repainting faded markings, trimming overgrown vegetation, and restoring damaged road signage so drivers can navigate more safely.

One of the department’s priority areas is the Andaya Highway in Sipocot, Camarines Sur, a key artery linked to the Maharlika Highway route used by travelers heading to Bicol and beyond. Dizon said that unlike previous setups, the one-way traffic system in the area will no longer be used during the Holy Week rush.

He added that the government wants the Maharlika Highway stretch from Quezon through Bicol and onward to Samar and Leyte to be fully passable before the holiday peak. In short, hataw ang repairs now, while the bigger rehabilitation work is scheduled to begin only after Holy Week.
