The Philippine Red Cross has gone on high alert for Holy Week, saying it expects a huge wave of travelers heading to provinces, churches, and vacation spots around the country. With the annual exodus underway, the group said the usual risks are back too — crowded terminals, heavy traffic, and more road and travel emergencies.
Based on the Manila Bulletin report, the PRC will stay on high alert from March 29 to April 5. It has deployed 2,224 personnel nationwide, made up of 1,887 volunteers and 337 staff members assigned to strategic areas where help may be needed fast.
The organization said it has already put up 296 first aid stations and 113 welfare desks. Those are backed by 71 ambulances, 110 foot patrol teams, 71 roving mobile units, and 15 emergency vehicles positioned in major highways, terminals, airports, seaports, churches, and tourist destinations.
PRC chairman and CEO Richard Gordon said the public can call 143 if accidents happen during the holiday rush. Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang, meanwhile, urged travelers to check vehicle condition, practice food and water safety, bring basic first aid supplies, and stay hydrated during the dry season.
The PRC said its operations plan could expand even further, with targets of 2,238 personnel and more response stations nationwide. The message is simple but important: while many Filipinos are focused on biyahe and family time, safety and preparedness still need to stay front and center.
