Gilas Pilipinas Women delivered their best-ever finish in the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup after taking home the silver medal in Singapore on Easter Sunday. The Manila Times reported that the Philippine squad reached the final at The Kallang, marking the team’s highest placement in the tournament so far.

The team of Cheska Apag, Afril Bernardino, Mikka Cacho, and Kacey Dela Rosa punched its way to the championship match by stunning Japan, 21-19, in the semifinals. That upset gave the Filipinas a real statement win and pushed them into historic territory.

In the final, however, powerhouse Australia proved too strong and beat the Philippines, 18-9. The Australians, made up of Amy Atwell, Emma Clarke, Lara McSpadden, and Kristy Wallace, also defeated Gilas during pool play and secured their fourth straight title in the competition.

Even with the loss in the gold-medal game, the overall campaign was a strong one for Gilas. The women’s team finished with a 3-2 record, beating Tonga in pool play, then Mongolia in the quarterfinals, before taking down Japan in the semis.

The result still counts as a huge step forward for Philippine 3x3 basketball. Hindi man gold, silver at this level is a legit breakthrough, and it gives the program real momentum heading into future regional and international events.
