Hindi Pa Tapos! After Gas Price Hikes, Water Bills Tataas Din Starting April
Just when you thought fuel prices were the only thing draining your wallet, here comes another hit — your water bill is going up too.
The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) confirmed on Friday that water rates will increase starting the second quarter of 2026, which begins in April. Both Manila Water and Maynilad applied for foreign currency differential adjustments (FCDA) to pass on exchange rate losses to consumers.
For Manila Water customers, expect increases of 14 centavos per month if you use 10 cubic meters, 29 centavos for 20 cubic meters, and 58 centavos for 30 cubic meters. Maynilad customers will feel it more — an additional 27 centavos for 10 cubic meters, P1 more for 20 cubic meters, and P2.07 more for 30 cubic meters of water.
To make matters worse, fuel prices are set for yet another massive hike next week — the ninth consecutive week of increases. An industry source said diesel could jump by as much as P19.30 to P22.30 per liter, while gasoline may rise between P14 and P17 per liter, driven by the ongoing Middle East war pushing global oil prices higher.
Malacañang met with oil executives on Thursday to ensure steady fuel supply and prevent gouging. Meanwhile, the only silver lining: lifeline water customers using less than 10 cubic meters per month won't be affected by the rate adjustment. Small comfort for everyone else.
