Legend Hilda Koronel Returns to the Big Screen After 13 Years — And She's Not Doing TikTok
After a 13-year hiatus from the silver screen, Philippine cinema legend Hilda Koronel is making a comeback in the most meaningful way possible. The veteran actress stars as the titular character in 'Sisa,' a historical drama directed by Jun Robles Lana that's set during the American colonial period — and it's now showing in cinemas nationwide.
In a recent interview with The Philippine Star, Koronel shared her secret to aging gracefully: stay away from toxic people. 'I stay away from people most of the time — toxic people, hypocrites, emotional vampires,' she said with a laugh. The actress prefers quality over quantity when it comes to friendships and has never been the party type, even in her younger years.
Now based in the United States, Koronel is selective about her projects, prioritizing health above all. And while many of her contemporaries have jumped on TikTok, she draws the line there. 'Ayokong magsayaw ng TikTok — oh my god!' she laughed. Her Instagram, she admits, is entirely managed by her Gen-Z fans.
'Sisa' is more than just a comeback vehicle. The film sheds light on a rarely discussed chapter of Philippine history — American-era concentration camps and the torture and killings of Filipino nationalists. Koronel says she wants the younger generation to see their history 'in a different matter,' beyond what's typically taught in schools.
The film also stars Eugene Domingo, Jennica Garcia, and Tanya Gomez, making it a powerful Women's Month release. With the FDCP's new Cinematheque Centre in Intramuros launching alongside the screening, it's a fitting homecoming for one of Philippine cinema's most luminous stars.
