PHIVOLCS has launched a new platform called Handa, an all-in-one system meant to help government and the public track hazards, warnings, and emergency situations in one place. The rollout was announced on Thursday by PHIVOLCS chief Teresito Bacolcol.

According to the agency, Handa is being positioned as a national disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation platform. The idea is to improve public awareness, strengthen planning, and help communities respond faster when trouble starts building.

Science and Technology Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said the project answers President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to build a unified platform for early warning and disaster-related information. The system was developed under the Geospatial Analytics and Technology Solutions Program and ties together geospatial tools with AI-assisted features.

Bacolcol said Handa is powered by GeoRiskPH and combines near real-time monitoring, location-based alerts, and interactive dashboards. It also pulls together geologic and hydro-meteorological hazards plus advisories from PHIVOLCS, PAGASA, and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau.

May practical side rin ito for users on the ground. The platform allows incident reporting for emergencies like flooding, fires, and road accidents, while an Emergency SOS feature can share a user's location with responders. PHIVOLCS says an AI chatbot is also built in to give hazard, weather, and safety information.
