Talk about good timing — Gilas Pilipinas has officially clinched a spot in the Second Round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, and they didn't even have to step on the court to seal it. The Philippines has New Zealand's Tall Blacks to thank after their 99-67 demolition of Guam confirmed the advance.

The result guaranteed that the Philippines will finish among the top three teams in Group A regardless of their remaining games. Gilas had built this cushion with a perfect 2-0 record in the opening window, courtesy of back-to-back wins over Guam that now look even more important.

Their next opponent, Australia's Boomers, have also already qualified with a flawless 3-0 record. So while that matchup may not have direct advancement implications, it's still a chance for Gilas to test themselves against one of Asia-Oceania's strongest squads.

The Southeast Asian basketball powerhouse is gunning for their eighth FIBA Basketball World Cup appearance overall and their fourth consecutive showing since returning to the global stage in 2014. With another First Round window still to be played, Gilas has breathing room to fine-tune their roster.

Philippine basketball fans have reason to celebrate early — the road to the 2027 World Cup is off to a promising start, and the Second Round will bring tougher competition as the qualifiers heat up.
