Frasco Out na sa DOT — Reassigned as Presidential Adviser, Self-Promotion Daw ang Issue
After months of rumors and online bashing, it's official — Christina Garcia Frasco is no longer the Secretary of the Department of Tourism. Malacañang confirmed her exit on Thursday, March 12, ending a tenure that began when she was appointed in June 2022.
But don't worry about Frasco being jobless — President Marcos has reassigned her as Presidential Adviser for Sustainable and Resilient Communities. According to Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro, Marcos tasked Frasco with helping strengthen national initiatives at the community level, particularly in areas facing climate-related hazards.
While the president looks for a permanent replacement, DOT Undersecretary Verna Burnsuceso will serve as officer in charge. There's already online buzz that career trade diplomat Dita Angara-Mathay — currently the Philippines' commercial counselor in Tokyo — could be the next Tourism chief.
The removal comes after sustained criticism over Frasco's perceived self-promotion using DOT marketing campaigns. Social media users repeatedly called out tourism promotions that featured Frasco's face more prominently than the actual destinations. The Philippines has also lagged behind its Southeast Asian neighbors in tourist arrival numbers during her watch.
Marcos expressed appreciation for Frasco's service and said her experience working with local governments would continue to support the administration's priorities. Classic palace diplomacy — say thank you, then show them the door.
