The Philippines has taken center stage at the United Nations Security Council, making an impassioned case for humanitarian assistance in Myanmar as the Southeast Asian nation marks a grim milestone — five years of civil war since the military coup of February 2021.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, serving as the special envoy of the 2026 ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, briefed the UNSC in New York on the rapidly deteriorating situation. She highlighted ASEAN's ongoing efforts to advance the Five-Point Consensus and stressed the urgency of getting humanitarian aid to those who need it most.

"I called for renewed cooperation in supporting a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned pathway to peace," Lazaro said in a post on X. The situation is dire — the World Health Organization reports that access to aid has become "increasingly blocked," with armed clashes in Chin, Rakhine, and Sagaing states disrupting health services and preventing both patients and healthcare workers from reaching facilities.

The numbers paint a devastating picture: since the coup, over 30,000 pro-democracy activists and civilians have been arrested, with nearly 23,000 still behind bars and 129 facing the death penalty. At least 7,777 detainees have been confirmed killed, with another 4,500 deaths pending verification.

Under the Philippines' 2026 ASEAN chairmanship, the bloc continues to push for a peaceful resolution while emphasizing the need for unhindered humanitarian access to affected populations across Myanmar.
