Filipinas Fall 0-1 to Australia in AFC Women's Asian Cup Opener — Sam Kerr Header the Difference
The Filipinas put up a brave fight but couldn't stop the Matildas, losing 0-1 in their AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 opener at Perth Stadium in Australia. Captain Sam Kerr scored the lone goal in the 14th minute with a header — her first goal on Australian soil since that spectacular long-range effort in the 2023 World Cup semi-final against England.
It was a resolute defensive display from the Philippines, led by Australian-born Angie Beard, who kept the Matildas frustrated for large stretches of the match. Despite dominating possession, Australia struggled to create clear chances, with wingers Hayley Raso and Caitlin Foord running hard but finding little end product.
The Filipinas offered very little going forward, however, with Australia's goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln — only in the squad due to a goalkeeping injury crisis — barely tested throughout the 90 minutes. The second half followed a similar pattern, with the Philippines pressing slightly higher but still unable to threaten.
Mary Fowler, making her return from an ACL injury, came on in the 67th minute and injected some energy alongside fellow sub Amy Sayer, but the Matildas couldn't extend their lead. Matildas coach Joe Montemurro was satisfied: 'There was never any danger, we were in control. For me, no problems.'
The Filipinas now face a crucial Group A schedule ahead, with South Korea and Iran still to play. Drawn alongside hosts Australia, South Korea, and Iran, they'll need results to finish in the top two and advance to the knockout stage. The team's defense was the bright spot — they just need to find some attacking firepower.
