DOH Raises Red Flag After Self-Harm Cases Surge in Metro Manila
The Department of Health is sounding the alarm after a sharp jump in self-harm incidents recorded in Metro Manila this year. Based on figures cited by The Manila Times, the National Capital Region Police Office logged 111 cases from Jan. 1 to March 23, far above the 33 incidents reported during the same stretch last year.
That means the count rose by 236 percent, a spike that authorities said was often linked to emotional distress, relationship problems, personal loss, and financial pressure. Mabigat talaga ang mix na 'yan, and health officials are clearly worried about what the trend is showing early in 2026.
DOH spokesman Albert Domingo said the government’s message is simple: people in crisis are not alone. He pointed the public to the National Center for Mental Health’s 24/7 crisis hotline, which remains open for urgent mental health concerns and emotional distress.
The hotline numbers cited in the report include 1553, 1800-1888-1553, 09190571553, and 09178998727. The DOH said it hopes more Filipinos will seek help before things worsen, stressing that support is available at any hour for those who need immediate guidance.
For its part, the NCRPO said it is stepping up early detection and response through closer coordination with barangays and schools under its Enhanced Managing Police Operations framework. The wider takeaway is clear: this is no longer a quiet side issue, and agencies are being pushed to respond faster on the ground.
