Lucena Bishop Mel Rey Uy has asked the faithful to fast, abstain, and pray on March 27 as conflict in the Middle East continues to fuel fear and rising costs. His call ties the observance to Viernes de Dolores, framing it as an act of solidarity with people suffering from war, division, and economic hardship.
Uy said he wants Catholics to unite in prayer through Our Lady of Sorrows, whom he described as a guide toward order and peace. He also specifically remembered overseas Filipino workers in the Middle East, saying they should be entrusted to the care of Mary as they face uncertainty far from home.
Across the Diocese of Lucena, parishes were told to hold extended vigils and Eucharistic adoration, with priests expected to be available for communal prayers throughout the day. The bishop also said similar overnight vigils would continue on Holy Thursday leading into Good Friday.
The message lands at a time when many Filipino families are not just worried about conflict abroad but also about its effect here at home. Rising fuel prices and broader economic pressure have made the Mideast crisis feel less distant, kaya mas ramdam ng ordinaryong households ang kaba.
Uy said the spiritual actions are meant to ask God for peace and order throughout the world. In practical terms, the appeal also reflects a mood shared by many Filipinos today: concern for loved ones overseas, concern for prices at home, and hope that the crisis does not get any worse.
