Baguio City is about to become an even bigger deal in Philippine sports. The Philippine Sports Commission and the Bases Conversion and Development Authority have officially broken ground on the John Hay Sports Center — a modern 5,000-square-meter multi-sport training facility inside the iconic Camp John Hay estate.

PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio, who previously helped facilitate BCDA's takeover of Camp John Hay in January 2025, signed the memorandum of agreement alongside BCDA Chairman Hilario Paredes and CEO Joshua Bingcang during Saturday's groundbreaking ceremony. 'This project is a responsibility built on trust and hope,' Gregorio said.

Unlike traditional single-sport venues, the John Hay Sports Center is designed as a multi-disciplinary training facility that will accommodate basketball, volleyball, futsal, netball, handball, and floorball. The high-altitude Baguio environment is a major advantage — long recognized for building endurance and giving athletes a competitive edge.

BCDA Chairman Paredes emphasized the facility's importance for athletes from the Cordillera and Northern Luzon. 'Many of our athletes from the Cordillera region have to travel far and train without stability. A regional training ground here in John Hay changes that. It gives our athletes a place they can call their own,' he said.

The 6,000-square-meter lot inside Camp John Hay will host the facility, further cementing Baguio's status as a premier sports tourism destination. The partnership comes alongside the ongoing Panagbenga Festival celebrations, making it a landmark weekend for the summer capital.
