The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is projecting a faster inflation rate for February 2026, estimating it could land between 2.3% to 3.1% — a notable jump from the 2% recorded in January, which was already an 11-month high.

The central bank identified several culprits behind the expected price acceleration: higher prices of rice and fish, elevated domestic petroleum prices, and increased electricity charges in Meralco-serviced areas. These are everyday essentials that hit Filipino households directly sa bulsa.

There are some silver linings, however. The BSP noted that lower prices of vegetables, fruits, and meat could partially offset the upward pressures. Peso appreciation against the dollar could also help temper imported inflation.

The official inflation data for February will be announced by the Philippine Statistics Authority on March 5. But with the Iran conflict now threatening to send global oil prices skyrocketing, the actual number could end up even higher than the BSP's forecast — adding another economic headache for ordinary Filipinos.

The BSP said it will continue monitoring domestic and international developments to ensure its monetary policy remains 'consistent with the pursuit of price stability conducive with sustainable growth and employment.' Translation: they're watching closely and ready to adjust interest rates if things get worse.
